C, B and D are three of the most popular letters on everyone’s lips these days. They’re an abbreviation of the term cannabidiol, which is a compound and naturally occurring cannabinoid (plant-based chemical) found in hemp plants.

CBD was first discovered by Raphael Mechoulam, a researcher who in 1963 found the structure of cannabidiol. This led to discovering the endocannabinoid system and another of the most common cannabinoids in cannabis plants, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). That’s the one responsible for the psychoactive effects that people usually associate with marijuana. However, it’s important to note that CBD is not psychoactive, and it’s been studied by some to counteract the psychoactivity of THC.

There are three varieties of CBD extract that you’ll see used in various products and, yes, CBD isolate is one of them. To properly understand what CBD isolate is, we need to look at how CBD is extracted from hemp plants.

More About CBD Extracts

CBD is extracted from hemp plants by separating the plant material from the cannabinoids.

A simple way to do this is through the use of various solvents, such as ethanol. These can be mixed with other compounds to create what’s known as a full spectrum extract.

First, dried hemp is heated, and the solvents extract the plant compounds. What you’ll be left with is a compound that’s high in CBD, though it will also contain some THC and many other cannabinoids and terpenes. This extract is then dissolved into a carrier oil to give us the final full spectrum CBD product.

Why do people like full spectrum CBD products? This can be linked to the entourage effect, which argues that the compounds in hemp plants, cannabinoids and terpenes work together to produce a more substantial effect than they would alone.

The entourage effect is an exciting concept that can’t be confirmed or denied at this time. Still, it may explain why some people find full spectrum CBD products more effective. So, now that you understand what full spectrum CBD is, let’s take a quick look at broad spectrum CBD.

Broad spectrum is almost the same as full spectrum except for a tiny difference. All the compounds found in hemp plants will be included, except for THC. So, broad spectrum CBD is made either when THC is removed from full spectrum by distillation or, in some cases, by adding cannabinoids and terpenes back into CBD isolate.

Why do manufacturers process their CBD this way? Well, it’s essential to realize that some consumers want a CBD product that contains as little THC as possible, or none whatsoever, while still getting the benefits associated with the entourage effect.

That leaves us with CBD isolate, a pure compound that consists of nothing more than CBD itself.

CBD isolate is generally extracted using more sophisticated methods. One of these is supercritical CO2 extraction. It uses carbon dioxide under high pressure and extremely low temperatures to isolate, preserve and maintain the purity of the CBD extract.

While CBD isolate won’t offer you the advantages of the entourage effect, many people prefer it for various reasons. First, it is safe to use for athletes and folks in jobs where drug testing might occur because it won’t contain THC that may trigger a positive result. As well, CBD isolate is much more portable and can be taken along with you when traveling. This is thanks to its zero THC content and no other cannabinoids that may be questioned by folks in other states where laws may be stricter.

Suppose you really want to make sure that the products that you’re buying have nothing but CBD isolate in them. In that case, it’s essential to verify the company participates in third-party testing. This is done through organizations that take samples of the company’s products before they go to market. Then they’re tested in a lab to ensure they contain exactly what the label says. They will then issue a certificate of analysis verifying the contents that reputable companies make available to the public without issue.

Why are third-party testing organizations important? Well, if CBD were better regulated by state governments, it wouldn’t be. Still, right now, we’re living in a patchwork of laws and regulations in this country. So, it’s more important than ever that consumers have confidence in their CBD product. These types of third-party testing organizations offer consumers an extra step of transparency, and they should be embraced.

As always, you should make sure to do your own research too. This will allow you to discover which brands are reputable and provide high-quality CBD products emphasizing CBD isolate that you can trust.
