What Are CBD Edibles? Your Questions Answered

What Are CBD Edibles Your Questions Answered

CBD is taking center stage as a natural supplement and therapeutic alternative in our country. And it’s no surprise that in a market with a projected value of $20 billion by 2024 that one in seven Americans has now tried CBD products

CBD, otherwise known as cannabidiol, is a unique compound extracted from hemp plants. It’s also known as a cannabinoid. One of over a hundred such compounds, it’s the second most popular and well-known after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.

What CBD can do is interact with your endocannabinoid system (ECS). Only discovered in the early 1990s, the ECS continues to be researched for its vital role in regulating physiological processes to achieve a state of internal harmony, also known as homeostasis.

Americans are using CBD products for a variety of reasons. According to a Gallup poll, the top conditions or purposes that people are using CBD products for are pain (40 percent), anxiety (20 percent) and sleep/insomnia (20 percent). Other issues include migraines/headaches, stress and muscle soreness.

But that still leaves the question… How exactly are Americans getting their CBD? The most popular way remains CBD tinctures. These are popular because they come in various concentrations, are easy to take and are available in full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate forms.

However, tinctures aren’t for everyone, and a popular alternative is CBD edibles, which we’ll be taking a closer look at in this article. We’ll explore topics like what edibles are, their advantages versus other types of CBD products and where you can reliably find quality CBD edibles. By the end, you’ll be an expert on CBD edibles and ready to help your friends out when they have their own questions.

What are CBD edibles?

CBD edibles are any CBD product that you ingest. They require no special technique or additional step to gain the benefits of the CBD locked inside them. Simply eat the product and your body will do the rest of the work. As your system digests the product, the CBD will be released into your body and enter into circulation, allowing it to interact with your ECS.

Edibles can come in a variety of forms. One of the most popular is CBD gummies because of their great taste, portability and convenience. CBD gummies can be found in a variety of different flavors, so check the container you’re buying to make sure it’s your favorite.

Another type of popular CBD edible is capsules, also sometimes called soft gels. They usually resemble omega-3 capsules and are sold in bottles similar to gummies. They offer similar portability to gummies, but don’t chew them! You’ll need a swig of water or other liquid to get them down and into your system.

You may also be noticing CBD making its way into baked goods, mixed drinks and other culinary products like salad dressings. Many of these products will have fat because high-fat foods can increase oral cannabidiol absorption into the body. You’re more likely to find these on the menu at a café or restaurant than in an online store, however.

How are CBD edibles made?

CBD edibles are made using CBD extract derived from hemp plants and combining it with food or putting it in capsule form to be easily ingested. There are three forms of CBD that can be used when making edibles:

  • Full-spectrum
  • Broad-spectrum
  • Isolate

Full-spectrum CBD will contain CBD and many of the other compounds contained within hemp plants. This includes cannabinoids and, yes, THC, too — though there will only ever be a maximum amount of 0.3 percent THC by law. This is not enough to cause any psychoactive effects in most people, though it is a consideration for individuals needing to undergo drug tests or who just wish to avoid THC in general. The benefits of full-spectrum CBD relate to the entourage effect, which claims that synergistic benefits come when all the goodness of the hemp plant is allowed to work in tandem.

For those who believe in and wish to still gain most of those benefits but avoid THC, broad-spectrum CBD will be the answer. It will still contain many of the beneficial compounds and cannabinoids, but in a THC-free formula.

Lastly, you’ll find CBD isolate. This is pure CBD with nothing else. Many individuals find benefits in this form and enjoy that it’s clean and simple with nothing else along for the ride.

In all cases, check the product packaging when buying to know which you are getting.

It’s also a good idea to purchase from companies that make third-party lab results and certificates of analysis (COAs) freely available on their websites. These are documents that certify the amount of CBD and other cannabinoids present in any CBD product, including edibles, and will also show you that they are free of potentially harmful contaminants like pesticides.

By checking COAs, you’re able to get assurance that your product contains the amount of CBD it claims to and know for sure if there is or isn’t any THC present. As a consumer, you’re always within your rights to access this information. If you can’t find a product or company’s COAs, it’s best to avoid them.

What are the advantages of CBD edibles?

You have probably heard a lot about CBD oil and tinctures because, as we said, they’re trendy. And if they’re so popular, why should you be considering CBD edibles?

Good question.

We have a few reasons.

CBD edibles, like CBD gummies, offer a whole different level of discretion and convenience for busy folks or people on the go. CBD oils are typically taken sublingually, meaning under the tongue. A dropper full is squeezed out, held for 30 seconds or so and then swallowed. This is why they’re popular with people who like to take their CBD at home as a part of their daily morning routine.

Compare this to popping a CBD gummy in your mouth while heading out the door. Or taking your daily CBD capsules at lunch with a swig of water during work hours.

Many people enjoy having some form of CBD after a workout to help with any aches or muscle soreness. Again, having some CBD in edible form is excellent because it can be easily consumed as you get changed and ready for the next part of your day. Though, as a quick side note, if those aches and joint pains persist, a CBD topical cream works great for added relief once you get home!

As well, if you’re traveling for business or pleasure, CBD edibles are a whole lot more portable than oils or tinctures. You don’t have to worry about them leaking or getting flagged for liquids when boarding a plane. And, yes, thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, it is perfectly legal to travel with hemp-derived CBD products.

You’ll also know precisely how much CBD you’re getting with edibles such as gummies and capsules. It’ll be listed right on the container they come in and is usually around 25 mg per unit. This is an excellent starting amount for the novice CBD user, and once you’re more comfortable and experienced, you can begin taking a second and maybe even a third. What’s great about this is that you can precisely manage how much CBD is entering your body.

When buying CBD edibles at cafés and restaurants, it’s important to note that the same level of control is probably not there. You need to allow for a margin of error here and always make sure the place you’re buying the food or beverage from is one that you really trust.

One important thing to keep in mind when it comes to ingesting any type of CBD product is that it may take a little longer for you to feel the effects. This is because the product must first go through the digestion process to release the CBD into your system. However, once it does, you’ll enjoy all the same benefits as taking CBD oil sublingually.

Should I buy CBD edibles or make my own?

If you’re looking for ease and simplicity, you’ll most likely prefer to purchase pre-made CBD edibles. They’re convenient and reliable, as you’re assured of the amount of CBD in each serving that you’re taking.

Making your own CBD edibles can be fun! But there are some definite drawbacks to consider.

If you’re keen to make your own CBD edibles, start with a CBD oil or tincture and add it to your food or beverages. It can be a fun way to add a new ingredient into the mix for those who enjoy cooking, baking and mixology.

One potential issue of doing this is unreliable serving sizes and for certain parts of shared food to have more CBD than others. For example, thinking about adding CBD oil to a salad dressing, how can you be sure it is thoroughly mixed and that each person is getting the same amount? It’s pretty tough.

CBD oils and tinctures generally have a distinct natural flavor, and some companies choose to add other ingredients to mask or change this to make them more delicious. Be sure you’re taking this into consideration when making your meal. Let’s use the salad dressing example again. Citrus-flavored CBD oil might pair nicely with other salad dressing ingredients like olive oil and garlic, but a bubble gum flavored one, not so much.

If you’re looking to have some fun in the kitchen with your CBD oils and tinctures, go for it! But our recommendation is this is best for the occasional serving of CBD. When it comes to daily routines, it’s best to go with something like CBD gummies.

Where can I buy high-quality CBD edibles?

We’re firm believers that it’s best to buy CBD products online. When you shop online, you’re given access to companies across the country and not limited to what is available locally. This is great for those of us living in small towns or areas that might not have places selling CBD products.

It also allows you to better vet companies and have direct contact with them if need be. You can research, ask questions and check out those COAs all from the comfort of your home at your own pace. No salespeople trying to pressure you into buying something that you’re unsure of. And no brick-and-mortar markups being passed along to you.

The convenience and level of discretion offered by shopping online are additional significant pluses. The supplement choices you make are your own and don’t need to be anyone else’s business. There’s no need to advertise your preferences to every Tom, Dick and Harry on the street by walking into one shop or another. And, of course, you can order when you need to from your computer or smartphone without having to make a trip anywhere.

When shopping, just remember that as the person doing the buying, you’re in control of the decisions you make. Get the products that feel right for you from a place you trust. And if you’re not sure if CBD products, in general, are the right addition to your daily routine, consult your healthcare professional first for advice.
