What's the Difference? CBD Tincture vs. Oil

When shopping for CBD products, you’ll come across two common liquid formats: tinctures and oils. But what’s the difference? While these two options have a lot in common, they also differ in a few key ways that you need to understand. In this guide, we’ll go over the differences and similarities so you find the CBD products that suit your lifestyle. Note that some companies use the word “tincture” and “oil” interchangeably, so it’s important to read all the ingredients on the packaging before deciding.

One and the Same?

Let’s start with the characteristics shared by these two options. Both CBD oils and tinctures are liquid forms of CBD derived from the hemp plant, which can be taken sublingually (beneath the tongue) or added to recipes when cooking. They are usually packaged in small bottles with droppers to ensure that you get the ideal serving size with each drop. In both oils and tinctures, the hemp-derived CBD extract is added to another liquid. Most of the time, in the case of CBD oil, that liquid is usually a plant-based carrier oil. In the case of CBD tinctures, that liquid is usually an alcohol.

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is a liquid form of CBD taken orally that’s made of CBD extract as well as a carrier oil, such as coconut or hemp seed oil. These oils can bring additional health benefits and improve the smell and taste of the extract.

Whether you like taking CBD sublingually or like to use it to cook, you’ll want to get familiar with CBD oil. This is the liquid-like substance that’s extracted from the hemp plant, including the leaves, seeds, flowers and stalks. It is then added to a carrier oil, such as MCT oil made from organic coconuts or hemp seed oil. These oils can be beneficial and enhance the product. For example, some CBD oil and tinctures incorporate C8 MCT oil which is rich in nutrients that can improve your health. In fact, MCT oil may be able to promote weight loss, give you more energy and help you burn fat, among other benefits.

What Is a CBD Tincture?

CBD tincture sometimes refers to a liquid form of CBD taken orally that’s made of CBD extract suspended in a tiny amount of alcohol-based liquid. This liquid helps preserve the CBD and boosts absorption rate.

Although many companies use the word “oil” and “tincture” interchangeably, sometimes tincture refers specifically to a CBD product soaked into a solution of water and a small amount of high-proof alcohol. While this might sound less than ideal, alcohol is actually beneficial in a CBD tincture and can help increase the body’s absorption rate so you feel the effects of the CBD quicker. Alcohol also helps preserve the CBD so it lasts longer (sometimes several years). The amount of alcohol in CBD tinctures is not enough to make you feel intoxicated, so don’t worry about that!

If you’re not a fan of alcohol but still want the fast-acting appeal of a tincture, try the oil-based tinctures from Green Claw. Rather than using alcohol to increase the bioavailability of the CBD in our tincture products, we use C8 MCT oil from organic coconuts. For example, our SPIRO tinctures feature your choice of CBD isolate or full-spectrum CBD suspended in C8 MCT. This ingredient increases bioavailability naturally, with all of the added benefits of the C8 MCT itself. You can read more about the benefits of CBD tinctures with C8 MCT oil here.
